3 Ways to View Sheet Music: Which One Is Right for You?

Lead Sheet, Bars Sheet, or Notes Sheet — discover the three viewing modes and find the best one for how you learn.

One Song, Three Views

Every song on Super Simple Piano can be displayed in three different ways. Each mode shows the exact same music, but presents it differently. Picking the right one for you can make the difference between confusion and clicking instantly.

1. Lead Sheet

The Lead Sheet shows lyrics with colored note circles on a traditional staff. You see the note name written inside each circle and the song lyrics printed below.

Best for:

  • Singers who want to play and sing at the same time
  • Learners who want to connect melody with lyrics
  • People who like seeing chord symbols above the staff
  • This is the most popular mode and a great starting point for most beginners.

    2. Bars Sheet

The Bars Sheet shows colored horizontal bars that scroll as the song plays. Each bar represents a note — its vertical position tells you which key to press, and its length tells you how long to hold it.

    Best for:

  • Visual learners who find traditional notation confusing
  • Kids and young beginners
  • People who want the simplest possible view
  • Guitar Hero or rhythm game fans — it feels familiar
  • Think of it as a piano version of Guitar Hero. If you've never read music before, start here.

    3. Notes Sheet

The Notes Sheet displays traditional sheet music notation, but with colored note heads instead of plain black. You get the familiarity of standard notation with the added help of color coding.

    Best for:

  • Players who want to learn to read standard sheet music
  • Students preparing for piano lessons or exams
  • Musicians transitioning from color-coded to traditional reading
  • How to Switch Between Modes

On any song's player page, you'll see three tabs at the top of the sheet music area. Just click the one you want — the song keeps playing and switches instantly. Try all three to see which one clicks for you!

    Our Recommendation

Start with Lead Sheet if you want to sing along, or Bars Sheet if you want the easiest visual guide. Once you're comfortable, try switching to Notes Sheet to start building your standard notation reading skills.

Pick a song and try all three modes!
