Convert a MIDI File into Fingered Sheet Music

Turn a bare MIDI file into practice-ready sheet music with finger numbers on every note.

A MIDI file has the notes and the timing, but none of the things that make sheet music playable: it does not know which hand plays what, and it certainly does not have finger numbers. Here is how to turn a .mid file into practice-ready sheet music with a finger on every note.

What a MIDI is missing

  • Hands. MIDI stores notes, not "left hand" and "right hand". A player has to guess the split.
  • Fingering. There is no field in MIDI for a finger number at all.
  • Engraving. MIDI is not notation — it has no staves, clefs, or page layout.
  • So converting MIDI to *fingered* sheet music is really three jobs: split the hands, choose a finger for every note, and engrave the result.

Doing all three in one pass

The Piano Fingering Generator does this from a MIDI upload:

  • Upload the .mid file. The tool reads the notes and splits them into a right-hand and left-hand staff.
  • Pick your hand size so the fingering fits your reach.
  • Get a suggested finger on every note, with runs and chords matched to standard patterns. Adjust any note you like.
  • Export the format you need:
  • PDF sheet — engraved standard notation with the finger numbers printed above and below the staves, ready to print.
  • MusicXML — an editable score for MuseScore, Sibelius or Finale (and one that Synthesia shows the fingering on).
  • MIDI — re-exported split into left- and right-hand tracks, with the finger as a text marker on each note.
  • A note on accuracy

Because MIDI has no notation, the rhythms and hand split are an approximation — good enough to practise from, and fully editable afterwards in MuseScore if you want to refine the engraving. If you have a MusicXML version of the piece, start from that instead for cleaner notation.
