How transposing works

Transposing changes every chord up or down by the same interval — the song's melody and chord relationships stay the same, but the actual pitches shift. Common uses:

  • Match a vocalist's range (lower a song that sits too high)
  • Move to an easier key on piano (C major vs F♯ major)
  • Pair with other instruments in different keys
  • Practice modulation by playing a song in all 12 keys
