Piano fingering generator

Give us the score, we suggest the fingering, you make it yours.

Upload a MusicXML or MIDI file. The tool assigns a finger to every note in both hands for your hand size, then you fix any note right on the score and export MusicXML that Synthesia and every score reader show. Everything runs in your browser.

  • Auto-add finger hints to your sheet music
  • Auto-generate finger hints to practice in Synthesia
  • Convert MIDI to sheet music with fingering
  • Personalised to your hand size

The result

A finger on every note — on the score, and on the falling notes.

The tool marks the fingering for both hands, you tweak anything on the score, and it exports so the numbers show up wherever you practise.

The problem

Writing piano fingering by hand is the slowest part of learning a piece.

Most scores ship with fingering for a handful of bars, or none at all. Everyone else pencils in numbers bar by bar, erases half of them a week later, and never gets them into the app they actually practise with.

Marking fingering on sheet music by hand is exhausting
A four-page piece is hundreds of small decisions. You lose an evening to pencil work before you have played a note, and any change to one hand position means rewriting the whole passage.
Synthesia videos show the notes, not the fingers
Falling-note practice works, until you reach a run and have no idea which finger starts it. Fingering numbers written into the file show up on the falling notes, so the video teaches the hand as well as the pitch.
Teachers spend hours preparing fingered editions
One arrangement, and then the same arrangement again for a student with smaller hands. Two hours of notation work per student, repeated every term.
Fingering from a book rarely fits your hand
Published fingering assumes an average adult reach. A child, or anyone who cannot span a tenth comfortably, needs a different answer for the same bar.
Why we built it

It started with one Chopin nocturne and a very blunt pencil.

A student learning from a free PDF asked which finger to use on a descending run. The obvious answer, the one printed in the old edition, did not work for her hand. Reworking two pages of fingering took a full lesson, and by the next week the sheet was covered in three layers of eraser marks.

The decisions themselves are mechanical: how far the hand can reach, where the thumb goes under, which position lets the next bar start comfortably. That part a computer can do. Judging whether it feels right is the part that stays with the player, so the tool suggests, and you keep the last word on every note.

Our position

Fingering is personal. We suggest, you personalise it for your own use case.

There is no single correct fingering for a bar. It depends on your hand, your tempo, what you played before it and what you are practising for. The tool gives you a complete, playable starting point in seconds, then hands you every note to change: one finger, a whole bar, or the entire piece at a different hand size.

How it works
01
Upload MusicXML or MIDI
Both staves are parsed, hands separated, repeats kept intact.
02
Pick hand and hand size
Left, right or both, and a reach from XXS to XXL. Every stretch is checked against it.
03
Correct, then export
Edit on the score or the live keyboard, then export MusicXML or MIDI with the fingering.
Questions
Does the fingering show up in Synthesia?
Yes. Fingering is written as standard MusicXML notation, which Synthesia reads and prints on the falling notes for both hands.
What does hand size actually change?
The maximum comfortable span between fingers. A smaller hand gets more position shifts and thumb crossings instead of stretches, and any move that still exceeds the reach is flagged on the score.
Can I keep the fingering already printed in my score?
Existing fingering in the file is preserved and treated as fixed. Suggestions fill in the notes around it.
Is it useful for teaching?
One upload, one hand-size change, and the same piece comes out fingered for a different student. Export the PDF for the lesson and the MusicXML for home practice.
Which fingering patterns does it use?
The standard ones: five-finger positions, thumb under, crossing over, scale and arpeggio groups, and the usual left-hand accompaniment figures — recognised per bar and applied automatically.
Does my file get uploaded anywhere?
No. Everything runs in your browser.
